Last weekend I rented a sailboat to spend the weekend with my wife, we were celebrating 15 years of married and I wasn’t going to work, at least I promised her I wouldn’t think about work.
Still, it happened. While we were sailing, it was impossible not thinking about it. The similarity between the situation of experiences in a sailboat and the management of a business which works with retailed sales was instant.
Such as the sailboat has to adjust to maximize the achievement of the wind that moves it, it’s the enterprise related to its operations and sales, which has to adjust according to the client.
On the way out of the marina to maneuver and leave, we turned the engine on a bit, as the opening of a new business where a starting investment it’s necessary to its opening.
So we had an idea of the destination we wanted, but that in that day, due to the climate conditions wouldn’t be possible because of the wind which is a variable we do not control, just like the will of the client. If you have a business with a new proposal that it’s exactly right for the costumers, your business goes from strength to strength, however if it doesn’t, you have to keep adjusting the course and the sails to get to the destination you planned.
And the work on the sailboat cockpit, the line and the group determine the efficiency of the team, each has its duties which must be done at the right moment according with the skipper, without questioning or arguing, likewise in a company, the guidelines must be followed so the performance is maximized.
But what caught my attention it’s the way how challenges are faced, at the sailboat the fact that today we can’t follow rote as we planned doesn’t make us unhappy, it actually make us happy and anxious because the challenge to get where we want will be even bigger.
This is a great lesson we should always remember, we choose our destiny, the rote might not be the one we planned, maybe we have to work a bit more or maybe it will take longer than we planned, but if we work hard putting better effort and with a good team work we will get there and victory will taste especial.
